Unit Spotlight: Tyken

Tyken, the levelheaded one of the triplets, and a talented mage. His character description:
THE LAST-BORN OF THE TRIPLETS, HE IS VERY COOL AND COLLECTED. HE DISLIKES STUDYING, BUT LOVES TO LEARN. HE IS OFTEN FOUND OBSERVING OR PLAYING WITH THINGS HE FINDS OUTSIDE OF CAMP. HE IS QUICK TO JUDGE, AND TENDS TO PUT WORDS IN OTHER’S MOUTHS.
Tyken is one of two mages you get in the story, but Gwenivere is not recruited for a long time, and being of the Est archetype, she is difficult to train, unlike Tyken, who is available from the start. Here are his pros:
  • Relatively good magic: His magic stat for a mage is good, at 65%, not amazing, but definitely usable. He also starts with a base magic stat of 9 at level one, which is pretty nice.
  • Great skill and luck: Tyken has a 60% skill and luck growth, meaning he will hit very often and will give a decent amount of critical hits.
  • Analytic: Tyken's personal skill gives allies within two spaces +15 avoid, and it drops adjacent enemies' dodge by 10, making it easier for units to crit those enemies.
  • Mixed bulk: Tyken isn't horrible at defense or resistance, at 35% and 40%, respectively, meaning he won't really have one type of damage he'd rather take over the other, and his HP growth at 45% means he isn't a damage sponge, but he won't die from a just round or two of combat.
And the problems he has:
  • Low speed: Despite Tyken's mixed bulk, he will get doubled often, with a speed growth of 35%. He also has low strength, at 10%, meaning he will have trouble carrying heavier tomes without a penalty.
  • Odd personal skill: His personal skill is useful sometimes, but it also requires him to be adjacent to enemies, which is risky for a mage unit, and he doesn't really benefit from his own personal skill unless he's attacking up close, which is ill-advised.
  • Awkward reclass: Tyken can reclass into outlaw. He has absolutely no place there until he promotes to adventurer. Outlaws have awful strength growths, use a bow, which Tyken has no experience with, and are built almost completely for avoiding combat, making it difficult for Tyken to take advantage of his magic stat or his bulk. It also makes it hard for him to get experience, because eliminating enemies is a chore for a unit with a strength growth of 10% and a starting strength of 2. He can shine once he's gotten the hang of a bow and has promoted to adventurer, where he can use staves and possibly a magic bow, and also has great mobility because of Movement+1 and Pass, but until then, he has serious trouble contributing to the army.
  • Mixed bulk: While having mixed bulk is generally a good thing, in Tyken's case, it can mean shaky growth in either stat. Because he doesn't shine in one or the other, he could end up not growing in either, and his HP growth doesn't stick out either.
Tyken is your first mage unit. With proper training, he can be an MVP to the group, but he has lots of problems that hold him back, and even though he is a main character and he will be a forced use character often, he is still kind of unreliable. Despite that, he is a solid magic soldier.
